The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Translation

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has brought profound changes to the field of translation, transforming both translation practices and theoretical perspectives. In particular, advances in machine translation, especially neural machine translation, have significantly improved translation speed, accessibility, and overall output quality. This study examines the role of artificial intelligence in the field of translation, focusing on its impact on translation accuracy, fluency, and the relationship between human translators and intelligent systems. The research explores the linguistic, semantic, and cultural challenges faced by AI-based translation tools, highlighting their limitations in handling context, pragmatics, idiomatic expressions, and culturally embedded meanings. By adopting a qualitative analytical approach, the study compares selected examples of machine-generated translations with human translations to identify areas of convergence and divergence. The findings suggest that while artificial intelligence has become an indispensable tool in modern translation, it cannot fully replace the human translator, particularly in creative, literary, and culturally sensitive texts. The study emphasizes the necessity of a complementary model in which artificial intelligence and human expertise function collaboratively to achieve higher-quality translation outcomes.
