Legal Liability for Cyber Extortion Crimes under Criminal Legislations A Comparative Analytical Study

Abstract
Cyber extortion constitutes one of the emerging crimes that have increasingly attracted scholarly and legal attention in recent years. Considering the growing number of Internet users worldwide, consequently, states have moved swiftly to enact deterrent criminal legislations aimed at curbing the phenomenon of cyber extortion. Similarly, states have cooperated through conferences and international agreements to explore mechanisms for exchanging information and expertise. Particularly, cyber extortion differs in terms of both evidentiary methods and substantive elements from conventional criminal offenses. This necessitates that states engage in cooperation and coordination at both security and judicial levels, as well as convene additional conferences and agreements related to cyber extortion.
