Indiscriminate Housing and its Impact on Sustainable Development in the City of Nasiriyah Using Geographic Information Systems

Abstract

Sustainable development is one of the most important topics that have attracted the attention of many countries in the world and the Arab countries، including Iraq in general and the city of Nasiriyah in particular، because of its great importance in preserving natural resources and for the purpose of preserving the urban environment، and economic growth is one of the main means to achieve development . However، the massive population growth and increasing problems (political,  security, economic and social)), and random housing is one of the biggest problems that threaten urban development in our Iraqi cities,  including the study area, as its negative impact is reflected on the dimensions of sustainable urban development within the boundaries of   the design of the city، which began to increase widely after the events of the year (2003)، and the reason for this is due to many factors that encouraged this، including factors (economic and social، proper planning for the growth of the city and legislative policy) whose accumulation resulted in the emergence of random housing in the city، as well as the weakness of the authorities  The legislative and regulatory bodies in the study area in order to limit the expansion and aggravation of this phenomenon and its transgression on the urban lands belonging to the state or to certain people from the city's residents, and that geographic information systems represented in the (Arc GIS) program are of great importance in assisting planners and decision makers in city planning   and directing its urban growth according to what is planned,  and geographic information systems have been used to determine the random housing areas in the city and indicate their impact on the original inhabitants of the city’s neighborhoods، so it is necessary to know the emergence and growth of random areas and to work and develop solutions for the purpose of reducing the overruns and the spread of housing slum units  in the city، whose impact is negatively reflected on the urban development in the city and the advancement of a better reality for the city of Nasiriyah.
