Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines major industrial projects in Basra Governorate, Iraq, during the period 1968–1979, a crucial phase in the country’s modern industrial development. It explores the establishment and expansion of large-scale industrial projects within the framework of state-led economic policies that aimed to strengthen the public sector and utilize growing oil revenues to build a national industrial base. The research identifies the main industrial projects in Basra and analyzes the factors behind their concentration in the governorate, particularly its strategic geographic location, access to maritime transport, and proximity to oil resources. The study adopts a historical–analytical approach to trace the development of these projects within national development plans, supported by a descriptive analysis of their industrial sectors and production roles. It relies on official reports, statistical data, and academic sources to assess their broader impact. The findings suggest that these industrial projects contributed significantly to the growth of Basra’s industrial structure, the diversification of economic activity, the expansion of employment opportunities, and the improvement of infrastructure and related services. However, the study also notes that some projects encountered administrative, technical, and operational challenges that affected their efficiency and long-term performance. The research concludes that the period 1968–1979 represented a formative stage in Basra’s industrialization, laying the foundations for the expansion of heavy and strategic industries in Iraq and consolidating Basra’s role as a key industrial and economic center at the national level.
